Description

  • Cupid and Psyche
  • white marble on a veined yellow marble base
  • Italian, circa 1900

Condition

Overall the condition of the marble is very good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The wings are carved separately. There is minor veining consistent with the material and there are a few small naturally occurring inclusions, some of which have been filled, including one to Cupid's proper right eyelid. The tips of Psyche's fingers on her proper left hand are probably restored. A section of the clouds at the back is reattached.

Catalogue Note

The present model appears to be inspired by William Bouguereau's exceptionally popular paintings of Psyche borne aloft to the heavens by a winged Cupid. Bouguereau reworked the subject in several compositions between the late 1880s and 1900. Although it does not exactly replicate any of the paintings, the marble clearly derives its principal features from the paintings, with a swooning Psyche lifted through the clouds in the arms of her lithe lover. Another version of the model inscribed Galleria Frilli Firenze was sold at Christie's New York on 23rd April 2004, lot 106. It is highly probably that the present marble was also produced for retail by the Galleria Frilli.
