Catalogue Note
The present bust depicts William Douglas-Hamilton, Marquess of Douglas (later 12th Duke of Hamilton). He attended Eton and Christchurch College, Cambridge. Cockayne et al. quote a contemporary description of him in his University days: 'He was full bodied, of a rudely ruddy complexion, had a powerful neck, and seemed strong enough to fell an ox with his fist...' The family crest has two mottoes, "Through" and "Jamais Arriere", the former of which features on the base of this portrait.
