Fine group of 3 documents signed by El Libertador, 1815 - 1829, as follows:
1. Letter signed ("Bolivar"), 1 page (8 7/8 x 7 1/4 in.; 225 x 184 mm), Angostura, 17 October 1818, to Baptis Irvine, with contemporary English translation on verso of conjugate leaf; silked on the written side, formerly folded, one tiny edge tear. Baptis Irvine was sent on a special mission in 1818 to treat with Bolivar over the capture by Venezuela of two American merchant ships. Much of his work was carried on personally with Bolivar and Irvine's impressions were an important source to the State Department. Bolivar in the present letter refuses to reopen the negotiation: "If at the time of receiving it [a note sent him by Irvine 13 October] I could have suspected that you had not changed your tone on the subject, I would have returned it unopened, because the discussion of the captives being terminated on my part, I neither can nor ought admit any communication concerning them." He goes on to advise that any further communications be directed through the secretary of state, and not directly to him.
2. Printed document with manuscript accomplishment, signed ("Simon de Bolivar"), 1 page (11 3/4 x 8 3/8 in.; 298 x 212 mm) printed heading "Republica del Peru, Simon Bolivar Libertador Presidente ..." with arms of Peru in left margin, "Cuartel General de Magdalena," 20 April 1826, naming José Antonio Montoya as Commander of the Infantry Battalion of the Civil Militia de Vigil, countersigned by Juan Salazar, and on the verso by Dominguez de las Carras, Ruiz, and Calderon; formerly folded.
3. Printed document with manuscript accomplishment, signed ("Simon de Bolivar"), countersigned by Vrianeta, and others on verso, Bogotà , 6 January 1830, appointing Mariano Azero as secretary to the Central Section of the Ministry of War, with back pay to June 1829, papered seal; formerly folded, a few stitch holes in left margin, edge tears in lower and outer margins.
