Condition
The painting is redder in colour and warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has quite a recent relining which has slightly flattened the paint surface whcih is clean and otherwise appears to the naked eye to be in good condition. No major damages are apparent to the naked eye. Inspection under UV light reveals a very well restored hole of 3 by 2 cm upper left as well as some retouched frame abrasion. This has been very sympathetically applied. Small scattered retouchings are present in the sky as well as in the darker tones in the lower half of the painting, for example in the foreground and around the outlines of the statue of a horse. Around the small tower in the centre of the composition is an area of retouching which covers an old pentimento of a larger cupola which presumably was beginning to become more apparent. The figures are well preserved. Offered in a modern frame in good condition. Could hang now.
