Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition. There is evidence of a thick discoloured varnish and an uneven craquelure overall. There are some scattered minor abrasions in the upper right hand quadrant and one in the lower centre as can be seen in the catalogue illustration. There are some very minor abrasions to the lower and bottom right edges of the canvas caused by an old ill-fitting frame. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the opacity of the varnish and reveals minor infilling to the craquelure along the backend of the horse's flank and to it's hind leg. Otherwise the painting appears to be in good stable condition. FRAME Held in a plaster and wood frame.
