Catalogue Note

The doors of the Temple of Janus were opened during wartime and closed during peacetime.  The present picture depicts the Emperor Augustus at the ceremony held to mark the end of the war.  The armour of his conquered enemies is being laid on the temple steps, the temple door is being pushed shut and sacrifices are being offered to Janus.
