Catalogue Note

With his free, energetic strokes, van de Velde conveys the drama of the battle, but he also is able to describe in minute detail the hulls of the ships and their gun ports.  The English ship resembles the St. Andrew, a 96-gun first rater, a drawing of which was sold New York, Sotheby's, 27 January 2010, lot 80.
