Catalogue Note
The blue Jambhala with his prajña Vasudhara seated together with two naga on a lotus flower, surrounded by a retinue of cloud-borne Buddhas and deities, with an upper register including Namasangiti, Manjushri, Shadakshari, Vajrapani and Amitayus, a Vajracharya below performing a fire ritual during a ceremonial procession, with a family of donors below worshipping Manjushri
This and the preceding painting, lot 88, both possibly from a larger series, would have been commissioned on the auspicious occasion of the ceremony involving the couple depicted in the processional scenes. Compare the treatment of the Lokapalas, the accented petal design of the lotuses supporting the principal deities, and the cloud and landscape design in a Nepalese paubha dated 1790 depicting the Paradise of Amitabha, see Pal, P., The Arts of Nepal: Part II, Painting, Leiden/Köln, 1978, pl. 218
