Condition
Some minor cracks in the dark colors, mainly in the man' coat in the lower left part.
Few minor restorations scattered on the surface.

Catalogue Note
Etude préparatoire pour le tableau daté 1851 et conservé au musée de l'Ermitage, Saint-Pétersbourg. Notre étude est très aboutie et montre peu de variantes par rapport à la version définitive. Il est possible que Vernet ait décidé de reprendre ce sujet après 1848, date de la mort prématurée de sa fille Louise, ce qui expliquerait l'écart de 10 ans entre notre esquisse et le tableau achevé.
Le tableau est probablement inspiré du lied composé par Franz Schubert en 1817. Les paroles sont tirées d'un poème de Matthias Claudius.
