Condition

The colours are fairly accurate in the catalogue illustration although the overall tonality is lighter in the original. The work is executed on canvas and is not relined. On the reverse along the edges, some narrow strips of canvas strengthen the original canvas. Due to the artist's technique, the work is superficially cracked throughout. Some areas of cracks have been stabilized and fluoresce under UV light. Some losses of paint located along the edges, due to previous mounting, are visible under close inspection. This work is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

signed with the initials; oil on canvas. Executed circa 1949-1951.

"Le tableau, chez Geer van Velde, est ce qui nous regarde. Il est cet espace tournoyant, ..., qui happe celui qui lui fait face. Il est dans l'ordre de la peinture ce que l'atelier est pour celui qui y pénètre: un espace pour se tenir debout." (Pierre Wat, L'innommable, in catalogue Geer van Velde, Musée Picasso, Antibes, 2000, p.18)
