Condition

Panel is sound. Some minor paint shrinkage just to the left of woman's face, directly above her head, and below her right hand. Small pin-dots of surface loss at center of lower right quadrant as well as a few around the top and just above figure's head. There are some spots of surface dirt in the upper left quadrant. Under UV light a thick layer of varnish is difficult to read through but no inpainting is apparent. This work is in good condition.

Catalogue Note

According to Annegret Hoberg and Isabelle Jansen, the authors of the artist's catalogue raisonné, the present work is a free interpretation by Marc of a postcard image of a painting by Honoré Daumier that was from the collection of the Musée de Louvre, which has been at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris since 1986 (see fig. 1).
