Condition

Framed in attractive ebony and gilt frame. The paper is lightly foxed, but this is not particularly noticeable, and the chalk is strong and fresh.

Catalogue Note

This figure relates to a soldier in the foreground of Wouwerman's Battle Scene of 1646, in the National Gallery, London.1 The small handful of generally accepted drawings by the artist does not, however, include any other study like this of an individual figure.
