Catalogue Note

This dressoir is modelled after the Göldlin von Tiefenau'sche Prunkbuffet, one of the most important works of Swiss furniture of the first half of the 18th century which was sold by Sotheby's Zurich on 10 December 1996, lot 259. The maker of the dressoir offered here must have known the original since the two pieces are almost identical in composition and marquetry forms.
The 18th century model is one of the main works of the Beromünster workshop and earliest comparably with the vestry cabinet, Beromünster circa 1730, from the collection of Baroness J. de Rothschild, England, which was sold by Sotheby's in Zurich on 16 June 1988 and today is in a private Swiss collection.
The coats-of-arms featured on the piece of furniture offered here belong to the alliance of Ulrich Anton Joseph Göldlin von Tiefenau and Anna Maria Franziska Elizabeth Krus. Ulrich Anton Joseph Göldlin of Tiefenau (1702-1757) was the son of Johann Konrad Göldlin of Tiefenau and Anna Maria von Sonnenberg. He was born on the 2nd of  January 1702. He went through the civil service training and in 1730 became the administrator for Heidegg dominion, and in 1749 he was made Vogt of Thurgau and then of Entlebuch in 1755. Anna Maria Franziska Elizabeth Krus was the daughter of Maria Franziska Cecilia Pfyffer. She was born on 4 October 1705. The pair were married in the St Peter's chapel on the 22 November 1723. The male line of the Göldlin became extinct with Franz Xaver Christoph (1724-1768).
