Catalogue Note

Although the elaborate armorial shield in the upper right corner has not given any clue in identifying the name or family lineage of this sitter, his fine costume of velvet and fur, his stature, and his seven gold rings (one, a signet ring stamped with the same armorial shield as above), would suggest that he was a wealthy merchant of considerable means.
