Condition
The canvas has been lined.
Examination under ultraviolet light reveals some retouching to the background, as well as older reouchings to the sitter's costume. The sitter's face would appear to be in generally good condition, with only very minor spots of retouching to the sitter's lips, nostrils, and left cheek. There is also some light retouching to the sitter's right hand.

Catalogue Note
Captain Sharpe may have been related to Sarah Sharpe, the daughter of Sarah Stowe who was the daugther of Philip and Sarah Dupont. The portrait can be dated to c. 1757-8 towards the end of Gainsborough's time in Ipswich.
