Sean Shanahan b.1960

Born in Dublin, Shanahan studied in London and Madrid and has lived and worked in Montevecchia, Northern Italy since the early 1980s.  His work combines abstraction with geometric minimalism as well as an acute attention to line and colour. The present work is typical of the artist's output from the early 1990s when he was working with a variety of unlikely painting surfaces such as fibreboard and natural woods as well as the polished steel sheets evident in Untitled which inevitably draws attention to the importance of the material itself. Shanahan later developed more monochrome compositions and recently his work, continually abstract, has been specifically related to architectural locations.

Shanahan has exhibited extensively throughout Europe including single owner exhibitions at the Dublin City Art Gallery The Hugh Lane and the Fondazione Scarampi, Italy and is represented in the permanent collections of The Irish Museum of Modern Art , Dublin and The Hugh Lane amongst many others.
