Catalogue Note
The present portraits, dating from the 18th century, are based on engravings by Aegidius Sadeler, of circa 1593, after Titian's celebrated series of Roman Emperors. The original paintings were commissioned by Federico Gonzaga and passed through several prominent collections before they were installed in the Gallería del Mediodía, Alcázar, Madrid. They were all destroyed in the great fire of 1734 and now are known only through copies.
