Catalogue Note

Anju Dodiya appears frequently in her own works surrounded by paints, brushes and easels, the tools of her trade. More often than not any paper or canvas depicted in her work remains blank.  The question of what to paint and how to present it to her audience remains a central theme in many of her works.  She can be seen battling with her muse or alter ego whilst suffering from artistic block, or in a recent work she is left standing in the stocks awaiting her fate perhaps at the hands of art critics or the more general public.

"…With works like these, that go beyond self-portraiture, Dodiya manipulates technique and subject matter to a deeper logic: the articulation of the artist's dilemma in contemporary times." (Kamala Kapoor, Anju Dodiya: Recent Paintings, Gallery Chemould, 1996).
