John Shackleton was appointed principal painter-in-ordinary to George II on 7th March 1749, succeeding William Kent. He continued in office under George III and was paid for portraits of the King and Queen until 1765-6.
Another version of this portrait was owned by Sir Benjamin Hammett and was presented by him to the Market Trust in Taunton in December 1792 as by Hoppner (see John Ingamells, Mid-Georgian Portraits 1760 - 1790, 2004, p.200). A copy belongs to Fife Council.
