Catalogue Note
Joos van Cleve was one of the most important artists active in the city of Antwerp in the first four decades of the 16th century, and one of the leading exponents of the Italianizing style that was current in Flanders at that time. The composition of the present work was derived from an idea by Leonardo da Vinci, and exists in a number of versions by Van Cleve and his studio. The present work apperars to be painted by a 17th century follower.
